What does it mean for teachers to lead "liteary survey" courses? I propose treating Henry David Thoreau as one of America's leading "literary surveyors," in quite the literal sense. His work--land surveying and philosophical writing--demonstrates his understanding of the convergences between matter and form, literature and landscape. This section will become a short illustrated article on the history of surveying and Thoreau's engagement in this nation-building enterprise.
